Description
Tender, fluffy dumplings steamed in a sweet and tangy cinnamon blackberry sauce. An easy, one-skillet comfort dessert.

- 1 pound (454g) blackberries, fresh or frozen
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (240mL) water
- 1 Tablespoon (15mL) lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups (240g) sifted flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 6 Tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- ¾ cup (180mL) buttermilk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Make Sauce: In a 9-10″ skillet, combine blackberries, 1 cup sugar, water, lemon juice, ½ tsp cinnamon, and ½ tsp vanilla. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Make Dough: Whisk flour, baking powder, ½ tsp cinnamon, salt, and ¼ cup sugar. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Stir buttermilk and ½ tsp vanilla together, then mix into dry ingredients until just combined.
- Cook: Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto simmering sauce. Cover tightly, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 12-14 mins (no peeking!). Dumplings are done when cooked through (195°F internal temp).
- Serve: Let cool slightly, then spoon into bowls. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For DIY buttermilk, add 2 tsp lemon juice to ¾ cup milk and let sit 5 mins. Store leftovers covered in fridge for up to 4 days.
