A healthier, flavor-packed twist on the classic Sloppy Joe featuring lean ground chicken and a homemade Cajun spice blend. Ready in 30 minutes!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground chicken
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced (any color)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns, for serving
  • Coleslaw and pickles, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix all Cajun spice blend ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook for 5-6 mins, breaking it up.
  3. Add onion and bell pepper; cook for 4-5 mins until softening.
  4. Add garlic and spice blend; cook for 1 min until fragrant.
  5. Stir in tomato sauce, paste, Worcestershire, brown sugar, and broth.
  6. Simmer for 8-10 mins, until thickened.
  7. Serve on buns topped with coleslaw and pickles.

Notes

Heat level can be adjusted by increasing or omitting the cayenne pepper. Filling can be made ahead and frozen.
